Description: Formed in 1881 as the Norfolk Regiment from the 9th (the East Norfolk) Regiment of Foot. They saw action during the Boer Wars at the battle of Paardenberg. During the First World War they fought along the Western and Middle Eastern fronts at battles such as Gallipoli, the 2nd battle of Gaza, Mons, Le Cateau, the first battle of Ypres, the second battle of Ypres, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Arras, Cambrai, the Somme (1918), and Passchedaele. In 1935 it was renamed the Royal Norfolk Regiment. During the Second World War they fought across the Western and Far Eastern fronts and were involved in the Dunkirk evacuations and in the Normandy invasions, landing on Sword beach. Those who fought in the Far East became Japanese prisoners of war building railways amongst other things. In 1959 they were amalgamated with the Suffolk Regiment, forming the 1st East Anglian Regiment (part of the East Anglian Brigade), later renamed to the Royal Anglian Regiment. Their nickname is The Fighting Ninth, The Holy Boys or The Norfolk Howards.
