Description: The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment) was formed in 1881 when the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot, the 77th (East Middlesex) Regiment of Foot, the Royal Elthorne or the 5th Middlesex Light Infantry Militia, the Royal East Middlesex Militia, the 3rd Middlesex Volunteer Rifle Corps, the 8th Middlesex (Sough West Middlesex) Volunteer Rifle Corps and the 17th Middlesex (North Middlesex) Volunteer Rifle Corps were amalgamated. They saw action in the Ber Wars, fighting at Spionkop and Valkrantz and Pieters. During the First World War they fought across the Western and Italian fronts at battles such as Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, Messines, the 1st battle of Ypres, the 2nd battle of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Bridge, Festubert, Loos, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Arras, Cambrai, Passchendaele, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), Lys, the 2nd battle of the Somme (1918), the advance in Flanders, the 2nd battle of Arras (1917), Selle, Valenciennes and Vittorio Veneto. In 1921 they were renamed The Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own). In 1948 they became part of the Home Counties Brigade. In 1966 they were amalgamated with the Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment, Queen's Own Buffs and the Royal Sussex Regiment, forming The Queen's Regiment. In 1992 they were amalgamated, forming the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment. Their nickname is The Diehards, The Pot Hooks or The Steelbacks.
