Description: Formed in 1881 by an amalgamation of the 61st (South Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot and the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot, forming the Gloucestershire Regiment. They saw action in the Boer Wars, fighting at Ladysmith and battle of Paardenburg. During the First World War they fought across the Western, Turkish, Greek, Middle Eastern and Italian fronts at battles such as Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, the 1st battle of Ypres, the 2nd battle of Ypres, Aubers Bridge, Loos, the Somme (1916), Arras, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), Passchendaele and Gallipoli. During the Second World War they fought across the Western front and were invovled with the Dunkirk evacuations and the Normandy landings. In 1994 they were amalgamated with the Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment, forming The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment. In 2005 they merged with the Light Infantry, The Royal Green Jackets and the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment, forming The Rifles. Their nickname is The Back Numbers or The Glorious Glosters.
