Description: Formed in 1685 in response to the Monmouth rebellion. During the First World War they fought across the Western and Turkish fronts in battles such as Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, Messines, the 1st battle of Ypres, Loos, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Arras, Cambrai, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), WWI: Lys, the 2nd battle of the Somme (1918), Selle, Doiran and Gallipoli. During the Second World War they fought across the Western, African and Far Eastern fronts at the evactuation of Dunkirk evacuations, the Normandy landings and the battle of El Alamein. In 1958 it was amalgamted with The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment), forming The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire. In 2006 they were amalgamated with the Green Howards and the Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding), forming the Yorkshire Regiment (14th/15th, 19th and 33rd/76th) Their nickname is The Poona Guards or The Snappers.
