Description: Formed in 1759 as the Sutherland Fencibles. They were disbanded in 1763. In 1779 they were raised again as the 2nd Sutherland Fencibles. In 1793 the 3rd Sutherland Fencibles were formed. They disbanded in 1799. In 1799 thee 93rd Regiment of Foot was formed. They saw action in the Crimean war, fighting at Alma, Sevastapol and Balaclava. They saw action in the Indian Mutiny. In 1881 they formed the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders by amalgamating with the 91st (Princess Louise's Argyllshire Highlanders) Regiment of Foot. They saw action in the Boer Wars, fighting at Magersfontein, Modder River and Paardenburg. During the First World War they fought across the Western front at battles such as Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, the Ludendorff Offensive, Messines, the 1st battle of Ypres, the 2nd battle of Ypres, Festubert, Loos, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Arras, Cambrai, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), Lys, the 2nd battle of the Somme (1918), the3rd battle of Ypres, the advance in Flanders, the 2nd battle of Arras (1917), Selle and Valenciennes. During the Second World War they fought across the Western, African, Italian and Far-Eastern fronts at battles such as El-Alamein and the invasion of Italy. In 2006 they merged with the Royal Scots, the King's Own Scottish Borderers, the Royal Highland Fusiliers, The Highlanders and the Black Watch, forming the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Their nickname is the Agile and Bolton Wanderers, The Rorys or The Thin Red Line.
