Description: Formed in 1787 as Abercromby's Highlanders. They saw action in the Napoleonic war. In 1862 they were renamed the 75th (Stirlingshire) Regiment. In 1881 they formed the Gordon Highlanders by amalgamating with the 92nd Gordon Highlanders. They saw action in the Boer Wars, fighting at Colenso, Elandslaagte, Ladysmith, Majuba Hill, Spionkop and Valkrantz and Pieters. During the First World War they fought across the Western, Italian, African and Far-Eastern fronts at battles such as Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, Messines, the Ludendorff Offensive, the 1st battle of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Bridge, Festubert, Loos, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Arras, Cambrai, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), Lys, the 2nd battle of the Somme (1918), the advance in Flanders, Selle, Passchendaele and Vittorio Veneto. They lost over 28,000 men in the war. During the Second World War they fought across the Western, African, Italian, Middle-Eastern snd Far-Eastern fronts. In 1994 they were amalgamated with the Queen's Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Camerons), forming The Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons). In 2006 they joined the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Their nickname is The Gay Gordons.
