Description: Formed in 1771 by the Earl of Seaforth on his families restoration following involvement in the Jacobite rebellion. They officially became a regiment of the British army in 1778, formally named the 78th Highland Regiment of Foot. In 1786 they were renamed the 72nd (Highland) Regiment of Foot. In 1809 they were renamed the 72nd Regiment of Foot. In 1823 they were renamed The Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders. They saw action in the Crimean war. In 1881 they formed the Seaforth Highlanders by an amalgamating with the 78th Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs). They saw action in the Boer Wars, fighting at Magersfontein, Modder River and Paardenburg. During the First World War they fought across the Western and Indian fronts at battles such as Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, the Ludendorff Offensive, Messines, the 1st battle of Ypres, the 2nd battle of Ypres, Loos, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Arras, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), Lys, the advance in Flanders, the 2nd battle of Arras (1917), Selle, Valenciennes and Passchendaele. During the Second World War they fought across the Western and Middle-Eastern fronts and was involved in the evacuations at Dunkirk. In 1961 they amalgamated with the Queen's Own Cameron Higlanders (79th), forming the Queen's Own Highlanders. In 1994 they merged with the Gordon Highlanders, forming The Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons). In 2006 they joined the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Their nickname is the King's Men or The Macraes.
