Description: Formed in 1756 from a battalion of the 11th Regiment of Foot. They saw action in the Seven Years War. They saw action in the American War of Independence. They saw action in the Napoleonic war, serving predominantly in the Caribbean. In 1856 they were aboard the HMS Alert when it hit a reef. The soldiers stayed below deck to avoid it sinking before the captain could beach it. They remained in position despite rising water levels until they were safely on dry land. They saw action in the Indian Mutiny. In 1881 they formed the Prince of Wales's (North Staffordshire) Regiment after amalgamating with the 98th (Prince of Wales's) Regiment of Foot. They saw action in the Boer Wars. During the First World War they fought across the Western, Middle-Eastern and Turkish fronts, at battles such as the WWI: 1st battle of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Cambrai, Loos, Passchendale, Selle and Gallipoli. During the Second World War they fought across the Western, African, Far-Eastern fronts at battles such as Dunkirk, the invasion of Italy and D-Day. In 1959 they were amalgamated with the South Staffordshire regiment, forming the Staffordshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's). In 2007 they were amalgamated with the Cheshire Regiment and the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment, forming the Mercian Regiment. Their nickname is The Black Knots.
