Description: Formed in 1755 as the 55th Regiment of Foot. In 1757 they were renamed the 53rd Regiment of Foot. They saw action in the American War of Independence. They saw action in the Napoleonic war, fighting in the Peninsular Wars. In 1881 they formed The King's Shropshire Light Infantry when they amalgamated with the 85th (King's Lght Infantry) Reigment of Foot, the Shropshire Militia, the Royal Herefordshire Militia and the Shropshire Rifle Vounteer Corps amalgamated. In 1882 they were renamed The King's (Shropshire Light Infantry). During the First World War they fought across the Western and Balkan fronts at battles such as Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, Messines, the 1st battle of Ypres, Loos, WWI: Mount Sorrel, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Arras, Cambrai, Passchendaele, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), the 2nd battle of the Somme (1918), Selle, the advance in Flanders, Horseshoe Hill, Machukovo, Doiran. In 1921 they were renamed The King's Shropshire Light Infantry. In 1948 the regiment became part of the Light Infantry Brigade. In 1968 they were amalgamated with The King's Own Yorkshire Infantry, the Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry and the Durham Light Infantry, forming The Light Infantry Regiment. Their nickname is The Brickdusts, the Red Regiment or Old Five and Threepences.
