Description: Formed in 1744 as Trelawney's Regiment of Foot as an independent company in Jamaica. They saw action in the War of the Austrian Succession. In 1751 they were renamed the 49th Regiment of Foot. They saw action in the American War of Independence. In 1782 they were renamed the 49th (Hertfordshire) Regiment of Foot. They saw action in the Napoleonic war, fighting at the battle of Copenhagen as marines. In 1816 they were renamed the Princess Charlotte of Wales's Hertfordshire Regiment of Foot. They saw action in the Crimean war. In 1881 they formed the Princess Charlotte of Wales's Berkshire Regiment by amalgamating with the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment of Foot. In 1885 it was renamed The Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment). During the First World War they fought in battles such as Mons, Marne, Aisne, the 1st battle of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Bridge, Festubert, Loos, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Arras, Cambrai, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), the 2nd battle of the Somme (1918), Selle and Passchendaele. In 1921 it was renamed The Royal Berkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte of Wales's). In 1959 they were amalgamated, forming The Duke of Edinuburgh's Royal Regiment (Berkshire and Wiltshire). Their nickname is the Biscuit Boys.
