Description: Formed in 1692 as Sir Richard Atkin's Regiment of Foot during the Nine Years War. Later in 1694 they were renamed Colonel George Villier's Regiment of Foot. In 1702 they saw action in the War of the Spanish Succession having been renamed George Villier's Regiment of Marines or the 2nd Regiment of Marines. In 1703 they were renamed Alexander Luttrell's Regiment of Marines. In 1706 they were renamed Joshua Churchill's Regiment of Marines. In 1711 they were renamed Sir Henry Goring's Regiment of Marines. In 1713 they were renamed Sir Henry Goring's Regiment of Foot. They saw action in 1715 with the Jacobite rebellion. In the 1740s they saw action during the War of the Austrian Succession. In 1751 they were renamed the 31st Regiment of Foot. They saw action during the American War of Independence from 1776-1781. In 1782 they were renamed the 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment of Foot. They saw action during the Napoleonic wars, fighting in the Peninsular Wars. They were subsequently stationed in Afganistan and India before seeing action in the Crimean War, fighting at Sevastapol. In 1881 they formed the East Surrey Regiment of Foot after amalgamating with the 70th (Surrey) Regiment of Foot. In 1959 they were amalgamated with the Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey), forming The Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment. Their nickname is the Young Buffs.
