Description: Formed in 1678 as troops of Scots Dragoons, raised in Scotland. In 1681 they formed The Royal Regiment of Scots Dragoons. In 1694 they were renamed the 4th Royal Regiment of Scots Dragoons, referred to at the Grey Dragoons (as they rode only grey horses). In that year they saw action in the Nine Years War. At the end of the century they saw action in the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1707 they were renamed The Royal North British Dragoons, referred to as the Scots Greys. In 1713 they were renamed the 2nd Dragoons. They saw action during the Jacobite Rebellion the War of Austrian Succession and the Seven Years War. In 1877 they were renamed the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys). They saw action in the Napoleonic Wars but not fighting until the battle of Waterloo. In 1854 they saw action in the Crimean War, fighting most famously at the battle of Balaclava as part of the heavy brigade. They also saw action during the Boer Wars, fighting at Paardenburg. During the First World War they fought in the defence of France at the battles of Mons, Marne, Aisne, Messines, Neuve Chapelle, first battle of Ypres, second battle of Ypres, the Somme, Arras, Cambrai and WWI: Lys. During the Second World War they fought across the Middle Eastern and North African fronts (battle of El Alamein). They became a mechanised unit in 1940. They also fought in the invasion of Italy and later in the D-Day landings (also known as the Normandy invasion), heling to secure Juno beach. They also fought in the battle of Arnhem (part of Operation Market Garden). In 1921 they were renamed The Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons). In 1971 they were amalgamated with the 3rd Carabiniers. Their nickname is The Greys or the Birdcatchers.
