Description: Formed in 1685 as the Earl of Arrna's Regiment of Cuirassiers. In 1746 it came under Irish command and was renamed the 1st Horse. In 1788 it returned to British command renamed the 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards. They saw action during the Crimean war at the battles of Balaclava and Sevastapo. During the First World War they served on the Western Front and were the first of the British Army to fire on the Germans. In 1922 they were amalgamated with the 7th Dragoon Guards (Princess Royal's) forming the 4th/7th Dragoon Guards. Their nickname was The Buttermilks or The Mounted Micks.
