Description: Formed in 1650 as the Regiment of Cuirassiers during the English Commonwealth and were formed in Newcastle. When the monarchy was restored, they were renamed the Earl of Oxford's Regiment or the Oxford Blues. In 1750 they were renamed the Royal Horse Guards Blue. They saw action during the Napoleonic Wars fighting on the Iberian Peninsula and at the battle of Waterloo. In 1877 they were renamed the Royal Horse Guards (The Blues). They saw action during the Boer Wars, fighting at Paardenberg. During the First World War they saw extensive fighting at the battles of Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, Messines, Ypres, Loos, Arras, Passchendaele (3rd Ypres), Hindenburg Line and Cambrai. In 1918 they were renamed the 3rd Battalion, Guards Machine Gun Regiment. During the Second World War they fought on Western, Middle Eastern and North African fronts, involved in the battle of El Alamein and the invasion of Italy. In 1969 they amalgamated with the Royal Dragoons (1st Dragoons), forming the Blues and Royals. In 1992 they were joined with the Life Guards in a union (as opposed to amalgamation) forming the Household Cavalry Regiment and House Cavalry Mounted Regiment. Their nickname is The Blues.
