Description: Formed in 1715 as the 9th Dragoons or Wynne's Dragoons. In 1783 they were renamed the 9th Light Dragoons. They saw action in the Napoleonic Wars, involved in the invasion of South America and also fighting on the Iberian Peninsula and later at Waterloo. In 1816 they were renamed the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers. They saw action in 1857 during the Indian Mutiny and later in the Afganistan War. At the end of the 1800s they saw action in the Boer Wars, fighting in the battles of Belmont and Graspan, Magersfontein, Modder River and Paardenburg. During the First World War they operated largely as infantry fighting at Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, Messines, the 1st battle of Ypres, the Somme (1916), Arras, Cambrai, and the Hindenburg Line In 1936 they became a mechanised unit. During the Second World War they saw action on the Western Front (Dunkirk) before moving to North Africa fighting in battles such as El Alamein and the invasion of Italy. In 1960 they were amalgamated with the Prince of Wales's Royal Lancers forming the 9th/12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales's). Their nickname is the Delhi Spearmen or The Scarlet Lancers.
