Description: Formed in 1688 as the Lord Cavendish's Regiment of Horse, it was ranked 9th. They served under Irish command for a time as the 4th Regiment of Horse, known as the Black Horse. In 1788 (moving back under British command) they were renamed the 7th (The Princess Royal's) Dragoon Guards named after Princess Charlotte. They saw action during the Napoleonic Wars at the battle of Waterloo. In 1921 they were renamed the 7th Dragoon Guards (Princess Royal's). In 1922 they were amalgamated with the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards forming the 4th/7th Dragoon Guards. Their nickname is the Black Horse or The First and the Last.
