Description: Formed in 1685 as the Duke of Shrewsbury's Regiment of Horse, ranked 6th. In 1687 they were renamed Langdale's Horse. In 1687 they were renamed Hamilton's Horse. In 1688 they were renamed Coy's Horse. In 1691 they were renamed the 6th Horse. In 1697 they were renamed Arran's Horse. In 1703 they were renamed Cadogan's. In 1712 they were renamed Kellum's Horse. In 1717 they were renamed Napier's Horse. In 1740 they were renamed Neville's Horse. In 1744 they were renamed Cobham's Horse. In 1745 they were renamed Wentworth's Horse. In 1746 (moving under Irish command) they were renamed the 2nd Irish Horse or 2nd Regiment of Horse. In 1788 (transferring under British command) they were renamed the 5th Regiment of Dragoon Guards. They saw action during the Napoleonic Wars, fighting on the Iberian Peninsula. In 1804 they were renamed the 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Regiment of Dragoon Guards. In 1854 they saw action in the Crimean War at Balaclava and Sevastapol. In the late 1800s they saw action in the Boer Wars at Elandslaagte. They saw extensive fighting during the First World War. In 1921 they were renamed the 5th Dragoon Gaurds (Princess Charlotte of Wales's). In 1922 they were amalgamated with The Inniskillings (6th Dragoons), forming the 5th/6th Dragoons. Their nickname is The Green Horse.
