Description: Formed in 1685 as The Queen's Regiment of Horse, named for Queen Mary. In 1714 they were renamed as The King's Own Regiment of Horse after King George I. In 1751 they were renamed 1st King's Dragoon Guards. They saw action in the Napoleonic Wars, fighting at the battle of Waterloo. They saw action during the Boer Wars. During the First World War they were stationed in India but soon were deployed in France. They also fought during World War Two fighting in North Africa during the battle of El Alamein and allegedly being the first to reach Naples in the invasion of Italy in 1944. They became a mechanised unit in 1937 and in 1939 they were incorporated into the Royal Armoured Corps. In 1959 they were amalgamated with The Queen's Bays (2nd Dragoon Guards), forming 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards. Their nickname is The Trades Union.
