Description: Formed in 1685 as the 9th Horse in response to the Monmouth Rebellion. They were renamed as Lord Lumley's Horse. They were renamed The Queen Dowager's Horse. In 1691 they fought for King William against the counter-invasion by James II and as a reward for their efforts were renamed The King's Carabiniers. At the time of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745-46 they were renamed the Third Irish Horse to acknowledge that most of their number were Irish Protestants. However, they were still known as The Carabiniers. In 1788 they were renamed 6th Dragoon Guards (The Carabiniers). They saw action in the Napoleonic Wars, Crimean War (Sevastapol), Boer War (Colenso) and World War One, fighting at both the first battle of Ypres and second battle of Ypres, the Somme, the first battle of the Somme (1918) and Arras. In 1922 they were amalgamated with the 3rd Dragoon Guards (Prince of Wales's) forming the 3rd/6th Dragoon Guards. Their nickname is The Carbs, The Old Inniskillings, The Skilljingers or Titchburn's Own.
