Description: Formed in 1759 as Elliot's Light Horse. Renamed the 15th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons. They saw action in Europe during the Seven Years War. In 1766 they were renamed the 1st (The King's Royal) Regiment of Light Dragoons, after King George III. This was an attempt to follow a new numbering system but it was soon scrapped and by 1769 the regiment was renamed the 15th (The King's) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons. In 1807 they were renamed the 15th (The King's) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons (Hussars). They saw action in the Napoleonic Wars fighting at the battle of Waterloo. In 1819 they took part in the infamous Peterloo Massacre, a domestic demonstration for reforming that saw first the Yeomanry charge the crowd and then the 15th. In 1861 they were renamed the 15th (The King's) Hussars. They saw action in the Boer Wars fighitng in the siege at Ladysmith. During the First World War they operated on the Western Front taking part in most of the major battles, including Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, first battle of Ypres, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), the 2nd battle of the Somme (1918), and Cambrai. In 1921 they were renamed the 15th The King's Hussars. In 1922 they amalgamated with the 19th Royal Hussars (Queen Alexandra's Own) forming the 15th/19th Hussars. Their nickname is The Fighting Fifteenth or The Tabs.
