World War One

Description: Initially part of the Royal Flying Corps, number 61 squadron was active from 1917 in Essex. The squadron was comprised of Sopwith Pup, S.E.5 and Sopwith Camel aircraft. They were involved in home defense, created to counter day-time raids. They were disbanded in 1919.

World War Two

Description: The number 61 squadron was reformed in 1937. It was comprised of Handley Page Hampden, Avro Manchester and Avro Lancaster aircraft, becoming part of Bomber Command and No.5 Group RAF. They took part in operations such as the first bombing of Berlin, the action at Le Creusot and the attack on the Dortmund-Ems canal. In 1945 they helped repatriate Allied POWs.
