World War One
Description: No. 44 squadron was active from 1917. The squadron was comprised of Sopwith Camel aircraft, operating as home defense. Most famously, their commander was Arthur Harris who would later find fame as 'Bomber Harris'.
World War Two
Description: The number 44 squadron was comprised of Bristol Blenheim and Avro Lancaster aircraft. They formed part of Bomber Harris' No.5 Group and were one of only two squadrons to operate throughout the whole of the second world war. They took part in the battle of the Atlantic, and the battle of Normandy and by the end of the war had suffered the third highest casualty rate of all RAF squadrons. They included 'Rhodesia' in their title thanks to 25% of the squadron's air and ground crew originating in Rhodesia.
