World War One
Description: Initially part of the Royal Flying Corps, number 41 squadron was active from 1916. It was formed from a core of men from No.28 Squadron. The squadron was comprised of Vickers F.B.5 'Gunbus', De Havilland D.H.2 'Scout', Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.8, D.H.5 and S.E.5a aircraft. They took part in the following battles: the battle of the Somme, the battle of Arras, the battle of Cambrai, the 2nd battle of the Somme (1918), and the battle of Lys.
World War Two
Description: The number 41 squadron was comprised of Supermarine Spitfire aircraft, and took part in the Battle of Britain. With the German plan to invade Britain, the only thing that stood in their way was the Royal Air Force. During the middle of 1940 just a few hundred pilots managed to hold off the Luftwaffe and allow Britain and her allies to go on the offensive. They also took part in the Dunkirk evacuations, and the battle of Arnhem, also known as Operation Market Garden. At the close of the second world war the No.41 squadron totaled 200 enemey aircraft destroyed with many more probably destroyed and damaged. They also took down 53 V-1s.
