World War One

Description: Initially a balloon company, they later became part of the Royal Flying Corps before incorporation into the RAF. The squadron was comprised of Avro 504s, Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.8s, Nieuport 17s, Nieusport 27s and Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5as. They took part in the following battles: the battle of the Somme, the 2nd battle of Ypres, the battle of Loos, the battle of Arras, the third battle of Ypres, also known as Passchendaele, the battle of Lys, the and the Hindenburg Line.


World War Two

Description: The number 1 (Cawnpore) squadron was comprised of Hawker Hurricane aircraft, and took part in the Battle of Britain. With the German plan to invade Britain, the only thing that stood in their way was the Royal Air Force. During the middle of 1940 just a few hundred pilots managed to hold off the Luftwaffe and allow Britain and her allies to go on the offensive. They were then re-equipped with Hawker Typhoons and later Supermarine Spitfires. They also took part in the Normandy landings, part of Operation Overlord.
